Brockway Mountain Field Trip
April 26, 2010 by skyehaas
Hello everyone,
I will be leading a Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society field trip to Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor to observe migrating raptors this weekend.
The trip is scheduled for Saturday, May 1st. As of right now, the weather forecast looks good enough for the trip to occur on that day. If the forecast changes within the next few days, I may possibly move the trip to Sunday, May 2nd, or cancel it altogether, so make sure to continue checking your e-mail this week. If you don’t hear from me again before Friday, we will be going to Brockway on Saturday.
This is an all day trip and we will be leaving Marquette at 6:00 AM, from our usual car pooling spot at the corner of Fourth and Spring Streets. Please be sure to bring plenty of gas money if you think you may be riding with others. Make sure to bring lunch, water, snacks, warm clothes, folding chairs, scopes, cameras, and anything else you might want. There are outhouses on top of the mountain.
For those who live closer to Brockway and would like to join us, we should be arriving on Brockway around 9:00 to 9:30 AM.
This is the fifth consecutive year that LWAS has scheduled a Brockway trip in the spring, although bad weather kept us home in 2008, so it will be our fourth trip. We’ve had some great experiences on the mountain, seeing large numbers of Broad-winged and Sharp-shinned Hawks as well as Rough-legged Hawks, Golden Eagles, and others. We have also seen other migrant birds on this trip, ranging from White Pelican to Bohemian Waxwing.
Of course, this year’s trip is special because we have a hawk counter on top of the mountain. For more information and some great photos, be sure to visit keweenawraptorsurvey.org
I hope to see you Saturday morning.
