We’ve started putting our data on HawkCount! You can find the east-bound raptor data here: Brockway Mountain HawkCount! The link is also located in the “Related Links” below.

Weather: The day started out pretty warm with west winds that slowly moved to the north throughout the 5 hours of the count. Near the end of the 5th hour, fog moved in off the lake and shut down the count. Movement was light today, mostly early in the day. 3 Broad-winged Hawks, 1 Bald [...]

More north winds…

…equals less birds! Yesterday (18 April) winds were north throughout the count, 10-20 MPH with gusts around 25. And the birds didn’t seem to like it! I counted 5 birds, all were probably residents: 1 adult Bald Eagle, 1 adult Red-tail, 1 adult Turkey Vulture and a pair of American Kestrels. Talk about slow! Winds [...]

weather extremes!

wow- Caleb Putnam & I covered the count for Max today, and it was not pretty. Well it’s always pretty on Brockway, but it sure wasn’t very pleasant! After a short delay to the start of the count due to rain, we got about one hour of a flight in the form of 15+ birds [...]

Efforts to refind the bird later in the day were unsuccessful. Things were slower than expected yesterday on the Mountain. Bald Eagle numbers [...]

Howdy folks, I received an update from Dr. Martell on the progress of the tagged Golden Eagle that was in the Peshekee area last week. From Mark Martell: Golden Eagle 44 – “Fairchild” continued her eastward movement along the south shore of Lake Superior, flew south of Sault Ste. Marie and then north of Lake [...]

Weather: Winds were primarily from the S to the SE, relatively calm. Temps got up to around 11C, with almost 100 cloud cover all day. The morning started out pretty fast with large flocks of Canada Geese everywhere in the sky. In the first two hours, I tallied over 8000 geese. They kept moving through [...]

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted, but that is pretty much due to the lack of birds! Winds have been strong from the north for the last 4 days, with snow on Thursday. Then today, fog rolled in off the Big Lake around 12, so I shut down early. Highlights from the last [...]
