Greeting Keweenaw Raptor Enthusiasts! It’s been too long since we sent out an update about the project. First off, much thanks must go to Max Henschell who did a wonderful job as our debut counter. With all fledgling projects, we didn’t always have our next move planned out too far in advance, and Max’s willingness [...]

Well it was a blustery, cold day on Brockway- migration was a bit on the light side though not without a few surprises. Most shocking of all was a fly-over of 2 COMMON REDPOLLS, a bird that has been all but absent in the UP this last winter and spring. To have my first redpolls [...]

Yesterday (4/27), Max had the first SWAINSON’S HAWK of the season fly by the Mountain. Brockway can be a good spot to see these uncommon western visitors and early May should hopefully produce a few more of these handsomely marked raptors.

Hello everyone, I will be leading a Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society field trip to Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor to observe migrating raptors this weekend. The trip is scheduled for Saturday, May 1st. As of right now, the weather forecast looks good enough for the trip to occur on that day. If the forecast changes within [...]

Well, it turns out my bird yesterday wasn’t likely a kite, rather an accipitor caught at a rather odd angle. Oh well… Though today looked like it should have been a kicking day for migration, numbers show otherwise. Lot of people turned out throughout the day for what was supposed to be southwest winds but [...]

Howdy folks, Keweenaw Peninsula students paid a visit to the Brockway Count yesterday and the event was covered by TV 6 News. Here is a link to the video interview with Max: http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/news/video.aspx?id=446853 Thousands of birds fly above Brockway Mountain during their migration north By Ashley Palumbo Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 7:58 p.m. Read more: [...]
And I thought this was a Hawk Count….

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted, but that is pretty much due to the lack of birds! Winds have been strong from the north for the last 4 days, with snow on Thursday. Then today, fog rolled in off the Big Lake around 12, so I shut down early. Highlights from the last [...]

Today was a little slower than I expected. Winds were calm for most of the day and shifted from northwest to northeast as the day progressed. The Turkey Vultures liked the calm winds apparently though; I ended the day with 21. Only 4 Bald Eagles and 10 Red-tailed Hawks. Two interesting Red-tails of note: The [...]
